Law Reviews: New Chaos Codex FAQ Review and Reactions

We call it a FAQ but actually it’s an all-errata update to the recently-released 2012 Codex: Chaos Space Marines. Only a few weeks after the book’s release, GW has popped us out a FAQ to address a few hot-button issues. Well, one hot-button issue anyway, and a few others tossed in for good measure. Today we’re bringing you complete coverage of the new Chaos FAQ!

As I was putting together the accompanying graphic here, (including the copyrighted imagery from The Jerk, for those of you too young to recognize this immediately, used without permission under a claim of fair use) I was thinking “gee, it’d be awesome if GW started updating their FAQs so often that people got sick and tired of seeing this picture”. Will GW make my dreams of ad nauseam Steve Martin repetition come true? Let’s hope so. I’d love to see a general policy shift toward smaller – but much more frequent – FAQ updates.

Without further ado – bring on the errata!

“Page 61 – Typhus, Plague Zombies
Change to ‘Plague Zombies are Chaos Cultists that have the Fearless, Feel No Pain and Slow and Purposeful special rules and cannot purchase options other than to add additional models to the unit.’” – Codex: Chaos Space Marines FAQ (October 2012)

This was the big fix I think everyone was hoping for, and making it an errata (as in, “a change in the rules”) rather than a FAQ (as in, “this is what the rules already said”) lends GW’s FAQ writers quite a bit of credibility.  Did they change it because that’s what they wanted from the start or because the Warhammer Fantasy Zombies boxes weren’t flying off the shelves the way they expected?  Either way, expect to see some 35-model zombie hordes shambling their way across the tabletop in the near future.

“Page 69 – Axe of Blind Fury
Change first rules sentence to ‘Models with the Mark of Khorne, or Daemons of Khorne, only.’” – Codex: Chaos Space Marines FAQ (October 2012)

“Page 91 – superscript note 5
Change to ‘Models with the Mark of Khorne, or Daemons of Khorne, only.’” – Codex: Chaos Space Marines FAQ (October 2012)

This was another one that needed a fix.  Pre-FAQ, Daemon Princes updated to Daemons of Khorne couldn’t take the Axe of Blind Fury (hereinafter “the blind axe”) because they didn’t get the Mark of Khorne.  We’d received a couple of “ask the rules lawyers” emails asking about this very issue.  So… here you go!  I love it when a FAQ cuts down on our tremendous backlog of emails (and our sincere apologies go out to everyone still waiting on responses – work and playtesting have really cut into our email time of late).

Anyhow, I’d argue The Black Mace is still the better choice for a deamon prince since it takes better advantage of the prince’s innate AP2, but it’s always good to have more options!

“Page 97 – Chaos Terminators, Options, second bullet point
Change to ‘Any Chaos Terminator may choose any of the following three options:’” – Codex: Chaos Space Marines FAQ (October 2012)

Now chaos terminators can combine close combat upgrades with combi-weapons.  So if you absolutely, positively, have to break open that landraider, you can arm every single terminator with a chainfist and combi-melta.  Not recommended.

“Page 97 – Helbrute
Change points value to 100 points.” – Codex: Chaos Space Marines FAQ (October 2012)

I’m still not taking helbrutes, even at 100 points.  Show me an 85 points base cost or an option to dual-wield reaper autocannons and I’ll ebay up 3 of those great-looking Dark Vengeance models.  Until then, pass.
